Australia and New Zealand: A Journey Through Harbours, Wildlife, and Alpine Wonders

After a long overnight flight, touching down in Sydney felt like stepping into a postcard. Even through the jet lag, the city’s energy was impossible to miss—clean, modern, vibrant, and full of life. Our home base, Crown Towers Sydney, set the tone immediately with its floor‑to‑ceiling windows, luxurious bathrooms, and a bathtub TV that felt delightfully indulgent.

Sydney, Australia

We spent our first day wandering through The Rocks Market, a lively maze of local art, jewelry, food stalls, and handmade goods. From there, we strolled to the marina and into the Royal Botanic Gardens, where the views of the Sydney Opera House were nothing short of iconic. A celebratory drink at the historic Fortune of War pub wrapped up the perfect first afternoon.

While we admired the Sydney Opera House from every angle, one thing I’d recommend for future visitors is seeing a performance inside. Many travelers don’t realize the building contains multiple theaters hosting everything from opera and ballet to contemporary concerts and theater productions.

Beyond the iconic sights, Sydney’s personality is what really stood out to me.

Sydney’s neighborhoods surprised me with their mix of English charm and Asian influence—Hyde Park, Paddington’s boutique‑lined streets, and endless Asian eateries. The city feels casual, safe, and effortlessly cool. Travelers may also be pleasantly surprised to find that the U.S. dollar currently stretches quite well in Australia, making dining, activities, and sightseeing feel more accessible than many expect.

Highlights Around Sydney

  • Milsons Point: postcard‑perfect views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
  • Bondi Beach: golden sand, turquoise water, and that classic Aussie surf culture.
  • Sydney Fish Market: a dream for sushi lovers.
  • Taronga Zoo: incredible wildlife with sweeping harbour views.
  • Featherdale Wildlife Park: feeding wallabies and kangaroos was pure joy.
  • Dinner cruise with fireworks: a memorable way to wrap up our time in Sydney.
  • BridgeClimb Sydney: reaching the summit was an unforgettable, bucket‑list moment.

If you visit during warmer months, schedule the BridgeClimb early in the morning or at sunset for cooler temps and magical light. And if I had an extra day in Sydney, I’d spend it taking a surf lesson at Bondi or Manly Beach, an iconic Australian experience.

We also visited the Blue Mountains, known for dramatic lookouts and the famous Three Sisters rock formation. While the scenery was beautiful, I found the experience a bit underwhelming compared to Sydney’s harbour views, wildlife encounters, and other highlights. If your time in Sydney is limited, I’d prioritize those experiences first.

Melbourne, Australia

A quick hop from Sydney brought us to Melbourne—a city known for its festivals, sports culture, and famously unpredictable weather (“four seasons in one day” is no joke). Home to the Australian Open, Formula 1 racing, and countless festivals throughout the year, Melbourne has an energy all its own.

With free public trams and plenty of complimentary museums like ACMI, exploring was easy and fun. We loved wandering the Queen Victoria Market, especially during our food tour, where we sampled local specialties and learned about Melbourne’s culinary roots. Staying near the Yarra River or the market area is ideal for first‑timers.

Phillip Island, Australia – Day Trip

Phillip Island was one of those days that felt full of small wonders. We started in San Remo to watch the pelican feeding before heading to Phillip Island Winery for a relaxed tasting and lunch with gorgeous coastal views. A stop at Pyramid Rock gave us sweeping ocean scenery, and the Koala Conservation Reserve offered peaceful boardwalks and close‑up wildlife moments.

But the true star of the island comes out at night: the famous Penguin Parade. Each evening, hundreds—sometimes thousands—of tiny penguins emerge from the sea and waddle up the beach to find their burrows for the night. It’s one of the most heart‑melting wildlife experiences you can witness. For the best views, be sure to reserve the Penguin Plus seats; they put you right along the penguins’ natural pathways for an unforgettable front‑row experience.

Queenstown, New Zealand

Flying into Queenstown felt like entering another world—jagged peaks, deep blue lakes, and crisp alpine air. Pictures will never come close to capturing its beauty.

Our stay at Blanket Bay was nothing short of extraordinary. The lodge itself is a warm, luxurious retreat with stone fireplaces, rich wood interiors, and a staff that anticipates your needs before you even think of them. With included meals, pre‑dinner drinks, and a long list of activities—kayaking, hiking, a game room, and more—it was the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Milford Sound by Helicopter

One of the most breathtaking experiences of the entire trip. Our helicopter picked us up right from the Blanket Bay lawn for a scenic flight over mountains, waterfalls, and the dramatic fjords of Milford Sound. We landed on a mountaintop and later in a valley surrounded by snow‑capped peaks—moments that felt straight out of a movie.

Adventure & Exploration

  • Kawarau Bridge: the guys took on the legendary bungee jump.
  • Arrowtown: charming historic streets and a beautiful lunch at Mora.
  • Dart River Adventures: a thrilling jet boat ride for the adrenaline lovers.
  • Lake Sylvan hike: peaceful trails and a picnic surrounded by nature.
  • Glenorchy: a stop at Mrs. Woolley’s General Store for treats and local charm.

Blanket Bay was the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.

Kaikōura, New Zealand

From Queenstown, we flew to Christchurch and drove to the laid‑back coastal town of Kaikōura, which instantly reminded me of a relaxed Hawaiian beach town. Marine life is the star here, and we dove right in.

Our whale‑watching cruise delivered in a big way—we spotted sperm whales, a humpback whale, and a pod of over 100 dolphins dancing through the waves. Later, we walked along Seal Beach, where hundreds of seals lounged in the sun like they owned the place.

A snack from the seaside BBQ kiosk and a little shopping in town rounded out a perfect day.

This journey through Australia and New Zealand was a beautiful blend of city energy, wildlife encounters, coastal charm, and once-in-a-lifetime adventures. From Sydney’s iconic harbour and Melbourne’s vibrant culture to Queenstown’s breathtaking scenery and Kaikōura’s incredible marine life, every destination delivered its own unique highlights.

For travelers looking to combine vibrant cities, incredible wildlife, luxury lodges, and unforgettable scenery, Australia and New Zealand make an exceptional pairing—and one that will stay with you long after you return home.
