From its stunning coastline to its historic cities, Croatia is a destination that never ceases to amaze! I recently had the opportunity to explore this beautiful country on an educational trip. The journey was filled with incredible experiences that left me in awe of Croatia's natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture.

The Journey Begins: Arriving in Dubrovnik

I flew with Delta Airlines from Detroit to Amsterdam and then on to Dubrovnik without any delays. Upon arrival in Dubrovnik, I was welcomed by a private driver who transferred me to Hotel Excelsior. This luxurious hotel, a former royal villa built in 1913, is ideally located just steps from the UNESCO-listed Old City of Dubrovnik. With breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and the ancient Old Town, the hotel offers a perfect blend of historical charm and modern comfort.

In the afternoon, we embarked on a walking tour of Dubrovnik's Old Town, a historic area enclosed by impressive medieval walls. Rich in history and culture, the Old Town provided endless opportunities for exploration. We began at the Cultural History Museum, which features a captivating collection of art, weapons, and photographs that chronicle Dubrovnik's storied past. Our journey led us to St. Savior’s Church, as well as the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries, where we admired the city’s crown jewels. We continued to the Rector’s Palace and strolled through the Old Port, enjoying the beauty of various squares, monuments, and fountains. Each corner of the Old Town revealed a new chapter of its fascinating history, making it a truly immersive experience.

Exploring Hvar Island: Wine, Olives, and Scenic Beauty

The next day, we journeyed from Dubrovnik to Hvar Island, celebrated for its lavender fields and vibrant nightlife. Our scenic drive along the Dalmatian coast included a stop at a renowned winery, where we relaxed and tasted some of the finest wines in the region. Afterward, we took a short ferry ride from Drvenik Port to Hvar Island. Upon arrival, we were transferred to the luxurious Maslina Resort, where we would spend the next two nights. This 5-star resort, nestled within lush pine forests, offers stunning sea views and a peaceful retreat.

Hvar Island is well-regarded for its exquisite olive oil, so we visited a local olive oil market to sample its rich flavors. Later, we enjoyed a wine tasting at a local winery, discovering why Hvar's wines are celebrated for their quality and flavor. The island's natural beauty, combined with its culinary delights, made for a perfect day of exploration.

Sailing to Split: A Day on the Water

Our next adventure took us sailing through the pristine waters of Central Dalmatia, making our way to Split. Along the journey, we explored hidden bays, admired natural wonders, and visited the renowned Zlatni Rat beach. The crystal-clear waters of the Pakleni Islands and the impressive Red Rocks were highlights of this scenic boat tour, offering a glimpse of Croatia's untouched natural beauty.

Exploring Split: Food, History, and Culture

The following day, we set out on a 3-hour Food and History Walking Tour of Split. This tour was a feast for the senses, featuring generous food stops that allowed us to taste local specialties while learning about the city’s rich history. We explored the 1,700-year-old Diocletian’s Palace and wandered through the medieval highlights of the city. A delicious lunch at a local restaurant in the heart of town rounded off our exploration of Split.

The next day, we visited the historic town of Klis, known for its stunning mountain fortress, Klis Fortress. This medieval stronghold played a significant role in Dalmatian history and even served as a filming location for the popular TV series Game of Thrones. After exploring the fortress, we continued into the lush fields to the Olive Garden, where we were greeted with a homemade liqueur made from local fruits. We indulged in a genuine Dalmatian feast, sampling local specialties, tasting olive oil, and savoring excellent Croatian wines. This culinary adventure was a delightful way to experience the flavors and hospitality of the region.
