Spain is one of Europe’s most captivating destinations and could easily fill weeks of exploration, but sometimes a quick trip can still deliver unforgettable experiences. Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Spain with Queen of Clubs for a whirlwind journey through Barcelona, Madrid, and Sevilla, with a few special stops along the way.
In just one week, I experienced incredible architecture, vibrant culture, world-class cuisine, and some truly beautiful hotels. Each city had its own personality, and every stop offered something unique.
Here’s a look at my journey through Spain.
Barcelona: Vibrant & Full of Energy
My trip began in Barcelona, a city that immediately feels alive with culture and creativity. With its Mediterranean coastline, stunning architecture, and lively food scene, Barcelona offers an exciting mix of history and modern energy.
Where I Stayed: El Palace Barcelona
I stayed at El Palace Barcelona, a hotel with more than 100 years of history located in the heart of the city. The property has a classic old-world luxury feel, filled with antiques and elegant details.
The hotel recently completed a full refurbishment, restoring public spaces and guest rooms while incorporating handmade carpets, restored antiques, and beautiful reproductions of historic décor.
From my perspective, El Palace gives guests that timeless luxury experience. The hotel is conveniently located within the city center, although you’ll still want to take a taxi to reach Old Town or the waterfront. Popular shops like Zara and H&M are just one block away, and the rooms and bathrooms feel fresh thanks to the recent renovation.
Highlights in Barcelona
Barcelona offers so many experiences that it’s hard to choose favorites, but a few stood out during my visit:
La Sagrada Familia – Gaudí’s breathtaking basilica is unlike anything else in the world. Seeing it in person is truly unforgettable.
Old Town food market – Walking through the vibrant market stalls is a feast for the senses.
Penedès Wine Region – Just about 50 minutes outside the city, this beautiful region specializes in cava wines and makes for a wonderful vineyard excursion.
Sitges – A charming coastal town about 40 minutes away with a long beach promenade and relaxed seaside atmosphere.
The Barcelona Vibe
Barcelona feels incredibly international. Young professionals from around the world live and work here, which gives the city a cosmopolitan energy. Tapas restaurants line nearly every street, and the nightlife is lively and goes late into the night.
Next Stop: Madrid
From Barcelona, I traveled to Madrid, Spain’s capital city, and a place where history, art, and everyday life blend beautifully.
Where I Stayed: Rosewood Villa Magna
In Madrid I stayed at Rosewood Villa Magna, and it ended up being my favorite hotel of the entire trip. The property has been thoughtfully refurbished and feels incredibly sophisticated, with modern luxury touches throughout.
The hotel also features a gorgeous full spa, which adds to the overall experience.
The location does require a taxi to reach major attractions like the Royal Palace, the Prado Museum, and Old Town, but in my opinion the hotel is well worth the extra ride.
Highlights in Madrid
Madrid is full of cultural and historic experiences. Some of my favorite moments included:
Prado Museum – One of the most famous art museums in the world. If possible, I recommend arranging an early-entry private tour because it’s extremely busy during the day.
Walking through Historic Madrid – Exploring the historic center, including traditional “Centenarian Shops” and local food markets.
Carmelite Monastery – One of the most unique stops, where cloistered nuns sell cookies through a small revolving window.
Flamenco Show at Corral de la Morería – An incredible and authentic flamenco performance.
The Madrid Vibe
Madrid has a charming old-world atmosphere but still feels energetic and modern. One of my favorite things about the city is the local rhythm of life. Many Madrileños disappear between 6 and 9 pm before returning to the streets for late dinners and evenings spent with family and friends.
Onward to Sevilla
My final destination was Sevilla, the capital of Andalusia—and ultimately my favorite city in Spain.
Where I Stayed: Radisson Collection Hotel, Magdalena Plaza Sevilla
In Sevilla I stayed at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Magdalena Plaza, located right in the city center. The location is fantastic, just steps from Old Town as well as excellent shopping and restaurants.
The hotel blends modern comfort with Andalusian design elements like intricate latticework, native plants, and warm earth-toned interiors.
While it feels slightly more like a four-star property than a five-star luxury hotel, the unbeatable location makes it a great base for exploring the city.
Highlights in Sevilla
Sevilla is filled with history, culture, and incredible architecture. Some of my favorite experiences included:
Real Alcázar Palace – A stunning royal palace known for its intricate Moorish architecture.
Barrio Santa Cruz – The oldest quarter of Sevilla, filled with narrow winding streets and hidden plazas.
Seville Cathedral – One of the largest cathedrals in the world and the resting place of Christopher Columbus.
Guadalquivir River Cruise – A relaxing way to see the city from the water.
There are also wonderful day trips and experiences nearby:
Visiting the Aracena White Village and the beautiful Cave of Wonders
Touring a Toros Bravos bull ranch set across 500 hectares of countryside
Driving to the dramatic mountaintop city of Ronda
For dinner, I recommend the Triana district, where you can experience authentic Andalusian cuisine.
The Sevilla Vibe
Sevilla is romantic, historic, and full of life. It’s known for lively festivals, deep cultural traditions, and some of the warmest weather in Spain.
Of all the cities I visited, Sevilla was my personal favorite. If you only have time to visit one destination in Spain, this would be my recommendation. It also pairs beautifully with a trip that continues into Portugal.
Thinking About Visiting Spain?
Even in just one week, Spain delivered incredible culture, cuisine, history, and hospitality. From Barcelona’s international energy to Madrid’s artistic elegance and Sevilla’s soulful charm, every stop offered something special.
If Spain is on your travel wish list, I’d love to help you plan the perfect itinerary and share more insights from my experience.
